Acupuncture is the oldest form of documented healthcare in the world. It originated in China and spread throughout the Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Archeologists have found acupuncture needles in China dating from four thousand years ago. The first needles were made from stone; later, gold, silver, and today stainless steel

More recently, acupuncture was introduced into the United States as a direct result of President Nixon's trip to China in 1970. During the trip, a member of the group required an appendectomy. What made his surgery unique was the fact that it was performed while the patient was anesthetized with acupuncture as the only form of anesthesia.

Acupuncture works by balancing the body’s energy or more commonly known as Chi or QI (pronounced "chee").

Chinese acupuncture theory maintains that there are twelve main meridians or energy channels on the right and left and they relate to the internal organs: lungs, large intestine, stomach, spleen, heart, the pericardium (the sac around the heart), small intestine, bladder, kidney, gall bladder, liver, and the triple heater, whose function is the assimilation and transportation of energy and the maintenance of body temperature.

Located along these twelve meridians, which literally run all over the body from head to toe, there are more than 461 specific acupuncture points. Acupuncturists believe that either excess or a deficiency of Chi can result in the manifestation of a particular type of illness or dis~ease. When an acupuncture point is needled (a needle inserted into the point), the acupuncturist can manipulate the needle to either build chi if there is a deficiency of energy or drain chi if there is an excess of energy. It is through this balancing of energy that the patient's health is restored.

Is acupuncture painful?

Because of the extreme slenderness of the needle and that it does not “punch a hole” in the skin as a hypodermic injection needle does, it has been compared to a mosquito bite. Each needle is single use and is prepacked to ensure that they are sterile. For those that are needle shy, there is laser and moxibustion treatments to the same points that would be needled, they are just as effective and have shown to equally same positive results.
